Environmentalists have reiterated the need to safeguarding Coastal areas and the people that inhabit them from the effect of climate change. At the 2014 Annual Walk For Nature in Lagos, organized by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and sponsored by Chevron Nigeria Limited, Fidelity Bank Plc, 7Up Bottling Company Plc, UACN Property Development Company Plc, Chemical and Allied Product Plc and SAPETRO Nigeria Limited, participants call for actions aimed at sensitizing the populace to the dangers of Climate Change and what they can do as individuals to reduce their exposure to its effects is part of the strategy for mitigating the damaging consequences of Climate Change. The Prince Bernhard Scholarships (PBS) is an annual Scholarship Programme dedicated to develop the capacity of young to mid-career conservation professionals with active involvement in nature conservation activity all over the world. It comprises of a CHF10,000 award which gives applicants the opportunity to choose any conservation/nature-related professional development activity inform of short training/courses, publications, international conferences and workshops, as a means to develop their capacity in ensuring impact and effectiveness. The world’s biggest conservation Partnership – BirdLife International – has announced that vultures have rapidly become one of the most threatened families of birds on the planet. In a bid to stop this important family of birds slipping towards extinction in Europe and Africa, a global campaign asking for public support to Stop Vulture Poisoning has been launched. Following recent catastrophic declines of vultures in Asia that left landscapes littered with carcasses, vultures in Europe and Africa may be set to follow unless we act now – warned conservationists from BirdLife International. Vultures are important and essential for our health: “Vultures play a fundamental role that no other birds do: they clean our landscapes”, said Iván Ramírez, Head of Conservation for BirdLife International in Europe and Central Asia. Yet they are facing new and massive threats across Europe and Africa. A veterinary drug that is lethally toxic to vultures has been discovered to be commercially available in at least two European countries. The climate change rally took place in Lagos on September 22, 2014. The rally was in solidarity with the People’s Climate March towards building global awareness and urgency around mitigating climate change. Organized by the Climate Aid International (CAI), Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) and other environmental/youth groups, the rally held simultaneously with Peoples Climate March in New York, Paris and Rio, London, Berlin same day. The main objective of the march was to show the policy makers on the need to choose a side that favours sustainable development while demanding for decisive actions on climate change. The Lagos rally kicked off from Allen Roundabout Ikeja and ended at the Ndiubusi Kanu Park, Opposite Lagos State Governors House, Alausa Ikeja. It had in attendance the representatives of 18 coalition of NGO including NCF who was represented by the Education Unit, Media Unit and NCF Members. About 65 people participated in all.
