World Environment Day – June 2010
HISTORY OF WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY (WED)
It was established in 1972 by resolution 2994 on the 15th of December by the United Nations General Assembly and its commemoration was entrusted to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), whose International headquarters is located in Kenya. The date was chosen because it was the opening of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, which led to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
This year, WED focuses on Biodiversity with the theme- Biodiversity: Connecting with Nature. Biodiversity is the short form of biological diversity, and it is the immense variety of life on earth from all sources (both living and non-living) and their interactions. It includes diversity within species (genetic diversity), between species (species diversity), and between ecosystems (ecosystem diversity). Biodiversity is everywhere and serves as source of food, medicine, shelter, raw materials and various economic values for human existence.
We are an integral part of nature; our fate is tightly linked with biodiversity (the huge variety of other animals and plants, the places they live and their surrounding environments, all over the world). Yet this rich diversity is being lost at an alarming rate because of unsustainable human activities. The impact of these activities on the environment is perhaps now reaching its greatest level of awareness in human history. There is a growing concern regarding health effects of pollutants generated by industry, climate change from greenhouse gas emission, biodiversity loss, desertification and pollution of water tables among other things.
Coming down to our local environment in Nigeria, we have lost variety of life and species to deforestation, desert encroachment in the north, water body pollution in the Niger Delta, estate and infrastructural development. The world is faced with an unprecedented loss of natural resources most especially our biological diversity, economic development. Above all, it will radically affect the lives of future generation.
The WED agenda gives a human face to environmental issues, empowers people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development, promotes an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes on environmental issues and advocates partnership, which will ensure that all people enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.
The World Environment Day enhances political attention and action. Local and regional officials, head of states and governments commit themselves to care for the earth.
Both Federal and State Ministries of Environment and NGOs have celebrated WED for many years ranging from clean up campaigns to afforestation and public lectures.
On its part, NCF has consistently promoted the World Environment Day. In 1992, special programmes were designed for the youths to celebrate WED. Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) began
supporting the WED events in 1994 and it has continued till date. This has also cumulated in the annual Flora and Fauna Fancy Dress Competition. This competition has gained popularity over the years with about 60 schools participating each year.

How Can You Help Protect Biodiversity?
Learn about biodiversity: Learn all that you can about biodiversity and food issues. Learn about where your food comes from, including about how food is grown and raised around the world. Understanding biodiversity is important to how humans should live while respecting the earth’s finite resources. Following suggestions are ways you can contribute to biodiversity protection:
Be aware when shopping: Be informed in your choices when you go shopping. You can buy things that help to protect biodiversity. Individual choices on what you eat and buy are important:
- Whenever possible, choose healthy, local and sustainably produced foods;
- Seek foods that have little packaging;
- Check travel distances; the best food is food that has not been transported over long distances; and
- Buy products from companies that value the environment and people. Remember, companies will sell what people want to buy – so tell companies that you want products that do not harm biodiversity!
