Lekki Bird Club
Overview
Birds are the globally accepted indicator of our natural environment. Their presence or absence tells us the health status of where we live. Birds are the only taxa worldwide with the highest level of mobility. While some species like the Grey-necked Picathartes (Picathartes oreas) are confined to southeast Nigeria and southwest Cameroun, others like the tiny Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus) travels from the far north of Europe to the far south of Africa every year. They are not limited by administrative boundaries or racial systems.
Learning about and understanding the unique characteristics of birds are not left to bird experts alone. Even farmers in the most remote places in Nigeria are able to judge when to and not to plant from the activities of some bird species. The early morning bird calls is used as alarm clock in most rural setting across the globe. Birds are also entrenched into different religious and cultural systems. For example, Doves represent the Holy Spirit or serenity to Christians; while Vultures represent ‘forbidden thing’ to the Yorubas in south-western Nigeria.
In spite of the immense value of birds to us, not much is known about them especially in Nigeria. Their habitats are daily destroyed by human activities.
