About us - Nigerian Conservation Foundation
NATIONAL
EXECUTIVE COUNCIL SECRETARIAT
Who we
are
NCF is a non – governmental organization
established in 1980 and registered as a charitable trust
in 1982. Our vision is “a Nigeria where people prosper
while living in harmony with nature” and our mission is
“preserving the full range of Nigeria’s biodiversity,
promoting the sustainable (wise) use of natural
resources and advocating actions to minimize pollution
and other forms of environmental degradation”. We
believe that conservation measures must benefit people.
As such the protection and maintenance of basic
ecological processes is the foundation for sustainable
livelihoods and economic development.
The organizational governance is made up of a Board
of Trustees, a National Executive Council that functions
as Management Board, the office of the Executive
Director, and the Secretariat.
What we do
NCF pursues
the conservation of nature and its resources with the
aim of improving the quality of human life for the
present and the future. It is active in promoting the
long – term use and the preservation of the Nigeria’s
biodiversity including species, ecosystems, and genetic
biodiversity while promoting the enduring use of natural
resources for the benefit of present and future
generations. In this way, we help people to achieve
secure, sustainable livelihoods that are positively
linked to natural ecosystems.
How we do what we do
We focus on the conservation of Nigeria's natural
heritage and strive to demonstrate that human societies
can live in harmony with nature while improving their
standard of living and quality of life. We seek to
develop and support conservation actions that are
strategic, transparent, and economically as well as
environmentally sustainable.
In partnership with
other key local and international organizations, we
design and implement targeted actions linking
biodiversity conservation to people’s livelihood. The
ultimate goal is to stop and eventually reverse the
accelerating degradation of natural resources and the
environment as well as help to build a future in which
Nigerians prosper while living in harmony with nature.
What we
believe
Renewable natural resources such as
medicinal plants should be sustainably managed for
income generation especially for the rural poor;
Biodiversity conservation through the wise equitable
use of renewable natural resources is the bedrock of
economic upliftment of the poor;
A well – articulated system of protected areas
(National Parks, Game Reserves, Forest Reserves and
community driven initiatives) should bring tangible
benefits to people and contribute to poverty
alleviation.
And that with intensified public enlightenment,
environmental degradation caused by extractive
industries could be halted and eventually
reversed
